DESCRIPTION:On Trans Day of Remembrance\, we come together to honor\, mourn\, and remember our Trans siblings lost to transphobic violence over the past year.\n\nThis event will be co-hosted by Grand Rapids Pride Center\, Grand Rapids Trans Foundation\, and GVSU’s Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center\, and will feature a vigil\, a reading of names of those we have lost this past year\, a remembrance altar\, as well as a short program featuring guest speakers and a musician from the local Trans community.\n\nEmotional and mental health resources (and space) will be available. There will be space for socializing and connecting with other attendees following the program.\n\nWe will also be collecting donations for the Trans Sistas of Color Project Detroit.\n\nPARKING:\nPlease park in the Devos Center for Interprofessional Health (DCIH) upper level visitor parking structure. (An image of the lot entrance has been shared on the Discussion thread. Do NOT use the shared Spectrum/GVSU parking ramp straight ahead. A booth attendant will hand you a parking permit to display on your vehicle dashboard once you arrive.\n\nSECURITY:\nWe have hired a local trusted Queer-owned security company (Field Operations & Logistics Agency – FOLA) to be present at this event\, in order to ensure the safety and security of our attendees.\n\nACCESSIBILITY NOTES:\n\nPlease be mindful of our guests with scent sensitivities by refraining from wearing scents.\nWayfinding signage & volunteer guides will be available to navigate from parking to the room.\nThe venue has elevator and wheelchair access.\nGendered bathrooms are available on every floor of the DCIH building. Gender-inclusive restrooms are located on the Ground (002) and 1st floors (126).\nWe are working to provide ASL interpreters for the event. DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual Official Transgender Day of Remembrance in Palm Springs \nThe Transgender Health & Wellness Center is hosting TDOR 2023 in Palm Springs and Riverside. Please scroll below to get an update for locations. Details\, Time & location are subject to change. \nTransgender Day of Remembrance often called TDOR was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith. It has grown to a global moment to have a vigil to read the names of the transgender\, gender non-conforming and intersex (TGI) persons that have been murdered for being TGI. Although\, in a more supportive administration the previous administration with state conservative activist have nurtured an environment where ignorance is encouraged and rewarded. In 2021\, there were a little over three dozen reported murders of known TGI folks in this nation and there have been 24 as of July 2022 that were murdered in this nation. At least 32 transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed in the United States in 2022\, the Human Rights Campaign announced Wednesday in its annual report ahead of the Transgender Day of Remembrance. As of July of 2023\, there have been at least 14 deaths due to anti-transgender violence. This number is almost half of what it was last year and although the number has significantly gone down\, we want that number to be zero. \nWe have chosen to increase visibility to bring public attention to these senseless acts of violence by hosting TDOR vigils in Palm Springs and Riverside. This day also serves as a call to action—reminding us of the urgent need for visibility\, protection\, and dignity for trans communities\,” says Sara of PFLAG Moscow. “We must remember that every life taken matters\, silence is never an option\, and everyone deserves to live as their authentic self.” \nParticipants are encouraged to bring photos\, flowers\, or tokens to leave for our Transgender brothers and sisters who are lost. Candles will be provided for attendees. \nPFLAG Moscow is part of the nation’s largest organization dedicated to supporting\, educating\, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.
