DESCRIPTION:The 9th Annual Official Transgender Day of Remembrance in Palm Springs \nThe Transgender Health & Wellness Center is hosting TDOR 2023 in Palm Springs and Riverside. Please scroll below to get an update for locations. Details\, Time & location are subject to change. \nTransgender Day of Remembrance often called TDOR was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith. It has grown to a global moment to have a vigil to read the names of the transgender\, gender non-conforming and intersex (TGI) persons that have been murdered for being TGI. Although\, in a more supportive administration the previous administration with state conservative activist have nurtured an environment where ignorance is encouraged and rewarded. In 2021\, there were a little over three dozen reported murders of known TGI folks in this nation and there have been 24 as of July 2022 that were murdered in this nation. At least 32 transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed in the United States in 2022\, the Human Rights Campaign announced Wednesday in its annual report ahead of the Transgender Day of Remembrance. As of July of 2023\, there have been at least 14 deaths due to anti-transgender violence. This number is almost half of what it was last year and although the number has significantly gone down\, we want that number to be zero. \nWe have chosen to increase visibility to bring public attention to these senseless acts of violence by hosting TDOR vigils in Palm Springs and Riverside. DESCRIPTION:On Trans Day of Remembrance\, we come together to honor\, mourn\, and remember our Trans siblings lost to transphobic violence over the past year.\n\nThis event will be co-hosted by Grand Rapids Pride Center\, Grand Rapids Trans Foundation\, and GVSU’s Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center\, and will feature a vigil\, a reading of names of those we have lost this past year\, a remembrance altar\, as well as a short program featuring guest speakers and a musician from the local Trans community.\n\nEmotional and mental health resources (and space) will be available. There will be space for socializing and connecting with other attendees following the program.\n\nWe will also be collecting donations for the Trans Sistas of Color Project Detroit.\n\nPARKING:\nPlease park in the Devos Center for Interprofessional Health (DCIH) upper level visitor parking structure. (An image of the lot entrance has been shared on the Discussion thread. Do NOT use the shared Spectrum/GVSU parking ramp straight ahead. DESCRIPTION:Once again this year we will be focusing on the systemic oppression that leads to the the losses within our community. DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is a day nationally recognized on November 20th every year to remember transgender victims we’ve lost throughout the year due to murder\, suicide\, or abuse. Transgender people are murdered at a wildly disproportionate rate\, much higher than any other community of people. \nThe majority of the victims are Black and Brown. Every year the number rises as Trans and Non-Binary people have lost their lives to violence for no other reason than being who they are. We say “at least” because countless victims go unnamed and misgendered by law enforcement and media. As hard as this time of year is for most of us\, locally\, we come together each year to remember both the victims of violence.

DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. For two weeks in November\, the Office of Inclusion hosts a Transgender Day of Remembrance table in the entrance of IMQ to honor all those whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence in 2023. Members of the NAU community can visit the altar to pay their respects and to learn about the violence affecting the transgender community.
